Google has recently announced a new feature with Google Analytics that gives site owners the ability to filter bot and spider visitors from showing up in your site visitor data. It has created a bit of confusion, so we thought would we try to make think clearer.
To set the feature in your Analytics property you need to go into the Admin settings in Google Analytics and navigate to: Administration > Reporting > View Settings
Of course, the this new option is not 100% accurate, that a bot be excluded, especially as the bot must be part of the official IAB list of bots and spiders are recognized. The feature is not retroactive, so like the setting of goals any data already analyzed will stay the same. One site owner stated that the impact on total traffic numbers was approximately 3% for a relatively small site and even less impact on a larger site. Clearly this will depend on your business, the industry you are in and many other factors.
